May 1 is just around the corner. That date signals the start of our local six month reciprocal season. Fourteen of the best private clubs in our area allow interclub play for the price of only a cart fee….three others have a modest charge.  One of my favourite reciprocals is Sara Bay Country Club.

Sara Bay is not a typical Florida golf course in any way. It’s a throwback to years gone by…a Donald Ross design from the 1920’s. Short on sand areas and water hazards, it is very playable and fun…until you reach the greens. Here’s where the design rewards the short game. Delicate shots are required or you simply roll off these elevated greens and chip again. The clubhouse is also loyal to tradition. Not fancy or pretentious. In the Spanish style, the Grill Room serves casual dining but the ball room opens for major events. A real effort has been made to preserve the feel and tradition of a proud golf club.

As for location, Sara Bay is only 10 minutes from downtown. Anyone living in one of the newer downtown condominiums ( 100 Central, Plaza at Five Points, 1350 Main ) could easily make this their home club. Call me for other nearby suggestions in the single family home choices…Indian Beach and the Ringling Museum area have options in literally all price ranges.
